Kirk Rueter

3/6/2006

Rueter, who went unsigned during the offseason, retired on Monday. The 35-year-old left-hander was 2-7 with a 5.95 ERA with the San Francisco Giants last season before he was designated for assignment on Aug. 14.

Shortly after being reactivated from the 15-day disabled list, Rueter was designated for assignment by the Giants.

The San Francisco Giants placed Rueter on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with gout in his right big toe. The move was retroactive to July 30. The Giants were going to send Rueter to the hill Sunday for injured righthander Brett Tomko, but the veteran lefty went on the DL instead. Rueter is 2-7 with a 5.95 ERA in 18 starts and two relief appearances. He hasn't pitched much since being relegated to the Giants' bullpen in mid-July.

According to Giants manager Felipe Alou, Rueter likely will spend the rest of the 2005 campaign in the team's bullpen, pitching in long relief. The veteran lefthander has allowed 13 runs -- 12 earned -- in his last seven innings of work and hasn't notched a win since May 13.

Despite giving up seven earned runs in 3.1 innings of relief in Saturday's loss to the Florida Marlins, Rueter will move back into the Giants' starting rotation next weekend during their series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The veteran lefthander was demoted to the bullpen earlier this month to give him a chance to work through some mechanical problems. He has not posted a win since May 13, losing his last five decisions.

In hopes of getting him out of his recent funk, the San Francisco Giants have moved Rueter to the bullpen for the time being. The veteran lefthander, who has not won since mid-May could return to the rotation some time after the All-Star break, according to manager Felipe Alou, but for now, he will work in long relief. In 17 starts this season, Rueter is 2-7 with a 5.48 ERA.
