Eric Young

11/21/2005

Young and the San Diego Padres came to terms on a one-year, $700,000 deal on Monday. The utility player suffered a separated shoulder in the home opener and didn't return to the Padres until early July. In 142 at-bats, he batted .275 with nine doubles, 22 runs scored and 12 RBIs. He played 25 games in the outfield and 14 more at second base.

On Saturday, the San Diego Padres activated Young from the 60-day disabled list. The second baseman-outfielder was injured during the first week of the season, dislocating his right shoulder making a leaping catch against the center-field wall at Coors Field.

Young was forced to leave Thursday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after slamming into the center-field wall while making a tremendous catch in the first inning. The veteran utilityman was diagnosed with a separated right shoulder and was replaced in the Padres' lineup by Adam Hyzdu. Young got the nod in center instead of Xavier Nady, who was out with strep throat.

Young will be re-evaluated on Friday, but there is a good chance that he will land on the 15-day disabled list. Through three games this season, he is 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and one stolen base.

Although he made a spectacular leaping catch against the wall in center-field, Young will only be rewarded with the 60-day disabled list. In the collision, Young suffered a dislocated right shoulder, and will now be out at least two months. The 37-year-old utility man was making a spot start in center field for regular Xavier Nady who was out with strep throat.

It is likely that 5-year veteran Adam Hyzdu will get the start in center until Nady can recover from the illness. The Padres hope Young won't require surgery to stabilize the dislocation, but they won't know for at least three weeks. "The muscles and all the connecting tissues are stretched out," said assistant trainer Jim Daniel, who added there is a "50 percent chance in an injury like this that the shoulder will be dislocated again." Surgery and the rehab process would cast doubt on his
