7/30/2005

Cordero signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets on Saturday, just days after he was waived by the Washington Nationals. The Mets have assigned Cordero to Triple-A Norfolk. Cordero hit just .118 in 29 games with Washington this season.

Cordero, who was designated for assignment last week, has been placed on waivers by the Washington Nationals for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. The veteran first baseman/outfielder was batting just .118 with no home runs and two RBI in 29 games (51 at-bats) this season. He missed more than six weeks earlier this year while recovering from surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus in his left knee.

Cordero has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Washington Nationals after missing more than six weeks while recovering from surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus in his left knee. The veteran first baseman, who was hitless with two strikeouts in four at-bats prior to his injury, is expected to serve as a backup. Infielder Brendan Harris was optioned to the minors to open a spot on the roster for Cordero.

Originally expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a torn medial meniscus in his left knee, Cordero likely will be sidelined just 3-4 weeks after undergoing successful surgery on Monday, according to the Washington Nationals. The veteran first baseman/outfielder missed the majority of the 2004 campaign after undergoing surgery on his right knee.

Nick Johnson will see the majority of the starts at first base in Cordero's absence. Prior to suffering the injury last Thursday, Cordero was hitless in his first four at-bats of the season, including two strikeouts.

Cordero has a torn medial meniscus in his left knee and will undergo surgery that is expected to keep him out for six to eight weeks. This is the second time in two years that he has had a tear in this area of his knee. The outfielder was injured during Thursday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Cordero was forced to leave Thursday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies after hurting his left knee. The Nationals' first baseman/outfielder, who will undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the extent of the injury, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. To fill the roster spot, the Nationals will recall veteran Carlos Baerga.
