Paul Quantrill

8/31/2005

The San Diego Padres designated Quantrill for assignment on Wednesday. In his two months with the Padres, following a July 2 trade with the Yankees, the 36-year-old righthander was 1-1 with a 3.41 ERA. His 24-2 strikeout-walk ratio was solid, but the opposition batted .294 against him. For the season, Quantrill is 2-1 with a 5.09 ERA in 44 games for New York and San Diego.

The Yankees have reportedly traded Quantrill to the San Diego Padres for Tim Redding and Darrell May. The Yankees will also receive cash in the deal. Quantrill had been designated for assignment by the Yankees on Thursday. The veteran reliever had gone 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 22 appearances this season.

The New York Yankees traded Quantrill to the San Diego Padres for Tim Redding and Darrell May on Saturday. The Yankees also received cash in the deal. Quantrill had been designated for assignment by the Yankees on Thursday. The veteran reliever was 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 22 appearances for New York this season.

Quantrill and fellow reliever Mike Stanton have been designated for assignment, as the New York Yankees initiated a roster shakeup on Thursday. Both relievers were extremely effective in recent seasons, but have fallen on hard times in 2005. Quantrill, whose slide began during the second half of 2004, is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 22 games this season.

On Tuesday, Quantrill was suspended for three games for throwing at Detroit's Jason Smith last week. His manager, Joe Torre, was suspended for a single game for the incident, in which the Yankees' righthander threw behind Smith before plunking him on the back on May 24. Quantrill was tossed because warnings already had been given to both managers, and he gestured for Tigers players to come out and fight when they left the dugout after Smith had been hit.
