7/31/2005

Groom, who was designated for assignment by the Yankees to make room for Alan Embree over the weekend, was dealt to Arizona for a player to be named or cash, just before the July 31 deadline. Groom was 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in 24 games with the Yankees this season.

To make room on the roster for newly signed Alan Embree, the New York Yankees have designated Groom for assignment. Groom was 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in 24 games with the Yankees this season.

Groom, the 13-year veteran who couldn't crack the Yankees' Opening Day pitching staff, has been recalled from Triple-A Columbus. The 39-year-old lefthander got the call when reliever Tanyon Sturtze went on the disabled list Monday with a strained left oblique muscle.

Groom wasn't especially effective at Columbus, making six appearances in which he allowed six hits, including two homers, over 4.2 innings. He posted a 5.79 ERA there.
