The Chicago White Sox recalled Nelson from Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday. The 39-year-old veteran relief pitcher agreed to a minor league contract with the White Sox on May 2 after being released by the St. Louis Cardinals on March 29.

Nelson, who pitched effectively in spring training but was cut by the St. Louis Cardinals, signed a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox Tuesday. The 39-year-old right-hander has been assigned to extended spring training in Tucson, Ariz. He was 1-3 with a 3.93 ERA and one save in 49 appearances last season for Seattle.

The St. Louis Cardinals have released Nelson. The long-time setup man, who signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals in January, worked 5.2 scoreless innings this spring.

Nelson signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals on Monday. The 39-year-old has spent 14 years in the majors, pitching for the Mariners, Yankees and Rangers. He went 1-3 with a 3.93 ERA in 49 games with Seattle last season and is 48-44 with a 3.41 ERA in 792 career games.

Nelson, who was placed on the bereavement list Tuesday following the death of his father-in-law, was activated by the Seattle Mariners before Friday night's showdown with the White Sox in Chicago. The veteran righthander is 1-1 with a save and a 2.93 ERA this season.

Nelson was placed on the bereavement list Tuesday following the death of his father-in-law. Nelson remained in Seattle and did not accompany his Mariners teammates to Detroit for the start of a series Tuesday evening.
