Cal Eldred

11/28/2005

Reportedly Eldred, who missed 56 games this season with a viral infection in the lining surrounding his heart, will announce his retirement from baseball. With St. Louis in 2005, the 38-year-old right-hander appeared in 31 games, including one start. He went 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA.

Eldred, who has been sidelined for two months with an infection in his heart lining, has been activated from the disabled list by the St. Louis Cardinals. To make room for the veteran righthander, the Cardinals designated southpaw Gabe White for assignment.

Tests have revealed that the cause for Eldred's recent chest discomfort is myopericarditis, an infection of the lining around his heart. The Cardinals' veteran righthander, who has been sidelined for more than two weeks, does not know when he will be ready to return to action. He will remain on the 15-day disabled list.

Eldred has been told to rest and avoid lifting anything more than 10 pounds. Once he is cleared to resume baseball activities, it will take him awhile to get his arm strength back. He was 4-2 with a 3.76 ERA in 52 relief appearances last year and has allowed just one hit in two shutout innings this season.

Eldred has spent the majority of this week in the hospital, undergoing tests to determine why he has been unable to shake a nagging upper respiratory infection. With a return not expected in the immediate future, the St. Louis Cardinals have decided to place the veteran righthander on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 11. His spot in the bullpen will be filled by Jimmy Journell.

More should be revealed about Eldred's status when results of the tests are known. He's eligible to be activated on April 26.

Eldred was sent to the hospital by Cardinals trainers on Tuesday with an upper respitory problem. Eldred has been battling a virus that triggered the problems since the season began. His status is expected to be updated on Wednesday.

Eldred missed some time last week, but was able to pitch in two games over the weekend. For now, consider him as day-to-day.
