Bernie Williams

6/21/2006

Williams went 5-for-5 for the Yankees on Tuesday, helping them snap a three-game losing streak with a 9-7 win over Philadelphia. It was the fifth five-hit game of Williams' career and his first since Aug. 15, 2002, against the Angels.

Williams has re-signed with the New York Yankees, agreeing to a one-year, $1.5 million contract, with another $1.5 million available in performance bonuses. The 37-year-old outfielder has seen his production gradually slip over the past several years. In 141 games last season, he batted just .249 with 12 home runs and 64 RBIs.

Williams was much better Monday, after being unable to lift his arm Sunday morning, the day after jamming his right shoulder on a sliding catch against Toronto. Still, the Yankees' center fielder was unable to generate any pop swinging from either side of the plate during some time in the cage on Monday. He wasn't in the lineup against the White Sox Monday night, giving way to Tony Womack in center.

On Saturday, Williams jammed his right shoulder making a sliding catch on a ball hit by Toronto's Reed Johnson late in New York's loss to the Jays. Stiffness in the shoulder kept Williams from playing for the Yankees on Sunday.

The New York Yankees have decided not to pick up the $15 million club option for next season on Williams. The center fielder's contract called for a decision on the option by August 1, and both sides seemed to agree that Tuesday's move was not the final word about the 36-year-old veteran's future with the club.

Williams and the Yankees' other DH options will be squeezed for playing time this week, when New York plays interleague series in Milwaukee and St. Louis. Williams is batting .247 with three homers and 18 RBI in 46 games this season.

Williams was the New York Yankees' designated hitter Tuesday, as the 36-year-old switch-hitter made his first start since serving as the team's DH last Friday. Williams was 1-for-4 and scored a run in Tuesday's 7-4 win over Seattle.

With Jason Giambi struggling mightily and possibly in line for a stint in the minors, Williams may be seeing more playing time as the Yankees' DH. Ruben Sierra, who is on the disabled list, will be re-entering the DH picture soon.

A sore throwing elbow will force Williams out of center field, where the Yankees' veteran has become more of a defensive liability in recent seasons. The Yankees plan to shift Hideki Matsui to center and second baseman Tony Womack to left as Matsui's replacement. That opens up second base for top prospect Robinson Cano, who is expected to get the call this week.

Williams has found himself in the No. 9 spot in the batting order more frequently of late, and it will be interesting to see if he gets many at-bats if this new defensive configuration sticks. So far, Jason Giambi and Ruben Sierra have collected most of the plate appearances from the DH slot.

During the seventh inning of the Yankees' 11-2 romp over Toronto on Wednesday, Williams left the game with a sore left knee. The center fielder downplayed the discomfort and suggested he would be back in the lineup on Thursday. Manager Joe Torre also called the tenderness minor, but it's possible that Williams will be given a day off with the Yankees playing on the artificial turf of SkyDome.
