Jeff Fassero

5/9/2006

The San Francisco Giants activated Noah Lowry from the disabled list Monday and designated Fassero for assignment to make room for Lowry on the pitching staff. The 43-year-old Fassero, who has posted a 7.80 ERA in 10 appearances this season, is contemplating retirement.

Fassero will return to the San Francisco Giants in 2006, as the 43-year-old lefthander has agreed to a one-year contract. He posted his best numbers since 2001, going 4-7 with a 4.05 ERA in 48 appearances for the Giants.

Fassero may pick up a start on Sunday against Houston, as the scheduled starter, Brett Tomko, has been bothered by a bruised right heel that has forced him into a walking boot in recent days. Tomko definitely won't take the mound, so the Giants will be turning to someone else to face the Astros.

With the San Francisco Giants recalling Jesse Foppert to start on Tuesday, and Jim Brower getting released, Fassero will slip into the long-relief role held by Brower before he was cut loose. The 42-year-old southpaw had stepped into the Giants' rotation recently for four starts, and he was 1-2 with a 5.21 ERA that was almost two runs higher than his relief ERA.

With the struggling Brad Hennessey being demoted to Triple-A Fresno, the Giants are expected to turn to Fassero to fill the fifth spot in the starting rotation. The 42-year-old lefthander has gone 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA in 20 appearances this season, including three starts.

Giants ace Jason Schmidt has returned from a short stint on the disabled list, meaning Fassero will shift back to a relief role. The 42-year-old lefthander, who made three starts in Schmidt's absence, is 1-1 with a 3.67 ERA in 15 appearances overall this season.

5/11/2005

With ace Jason Schmidt sidelined, Fassero has stepped into the San Francisco Giants' starting rotation. The veteran lefthander, who had pitched in relief in his previous 12 appearances this season, got the nod in Tuesday's meeting with the Pittsburgh Pirates and allowed just one hit over five shutout innings. He struck out two and walked none.

The performance likely won Fassero at least one more start. For the season, he has a 2.00 ERA, nine strikeouts and five walks in 18 innings of work.

With closer Armando Benitez expected to miss four months with a serious hamstring injury, the Giants will turn to Fassero and Matt Herges in save situations, according to manager Felipe Alou. In eight relief appearances this season, the veteran lefthander has allowed three runs on seven hits in 9.2 innings, striking out five and walking three.

Fassero has 25 saves in his 15-year career.
