Marquis Grissom

3/29/2006

Grissom retired Tuesday after signing a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs in January and batting just .200 in 17 spring games. Grissom, who turns 39 on April 17, played 17 seasons and leaves the game with a .272 lifetime average, 227 homers and 1,187 runs scored in 2,165 games. The outfielder spent time with Montreal, Altanta, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The Giants activated Grissom from the 15-day disabled list on Sunday prior to San Francisco's matchup against the Marlins. The veteran outfielder has been out of the lineup since June 12 with a partially torn left hamstring. He is hitting just .211 on the season, with a .293 slugging percentage.

Grissom will remain on a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Fresno through the weekend, but as long as no problems are reportd with his troublesome hamstring, he should be activated from the 15-day disabled list early next week. The Giants' veteran outfielder has been sidelined since straining his right hamstring more than a month ago.

On Monday, two San Francisco regulars were placed on the 15-day disabled list: Grissom with a right hamstring strain and third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo with a left quadriceps strain. Grissom had just returned a week ago from a right knee contusion that had sidelined the outfielder for two weeks.

6/4/2005

Grissom went 1-for-4 on Saturday against the New York Mets, just hours after coming off the disabled list. The Giants' outfielder has been out since May 20 with a knee contusion.

5/20/2005

The San Francisco Giants placed Grissom on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, retroactive to May 18. The Giants' center fielder is out with a right knee contusion. He was batting .202 with a .241 OBP in 32 games this season.
