Omar Vizquel

8/31/2005

Vizquel was on the San Francisco Giants' bench Tuesday, suffering from a tension headache that also produced dizziness. With backup shortstop Deivi Cruz dealt to Washington on the same day, the Giants recalled Angel Chavez from Triple-A Fresno to start at short.

Vizquel collected five hits in San Francisco's 14-7 victory over Minnesota Thursday. The Giants' shortstop went 5-for-6 with three runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base. He was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. His RBI single in the eighth inning knotted the score, 7-7, and he contributed a two-run double in the ninth, when the Giants pushed across a touchdown and an extra point.

Vizquel still had some minor bleeding in his mouth after undergoing surgery on Monday to remove a wisdom tooth. As a precautionary measure, the Giants held the veteran shortstop out of the lineup for Tuesday's matchup with the Kansas City Royals, but expect him to be back in action on Wednesday. Deivi Cruz got the nod at short in his absence.

Vizquel celebrated his 38th birthday by going 3-for-5 with an RBI and stolen base in Sunday's loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. The veteran shortstop, who signed with the Giants after spending his last 11 seasons with the Cleveland Indians, has been a pleasant surprise so far this year, batting .294 with six doubles, two triples, four RBI and six stolen bases in 18 games.

Vizquel, more known for his glove than his offensive production, has just one error in 84 total chances this season. Although he won't post the power numbers, expect decent totals when it comes to batting average, runs and stolen bases.
