Jose Mesa

4/28/2006

Mesa was suspended four games Friday for intentionally throwing at San Francisco shortstop Omar Vizquel last Saturday. The Rockies' reliever appealed the suspension and will be available for this weekend's series against the Florida Marlins.

Mesa agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Colorado Rockies on Thursday. The 39-year-old left-hander was 2-8 with a 4.76 ERA and 27 saves with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2005.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will not pick up their $4 million option on Mesa for 2006, instead paying him a $500,000 buyout. The 39-year-old righthander, who gave up closer duties to Salomon Torres and Mike Gonzalez late in the season, was 2-8 with a 4.76 ERA in 55 games. He recorded 27 saves and blew seven save chances. Opponents batted .302 and slugged .479 against him after the All-Star break.

Mesa blew his second save in as many games, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks in the ninth inning of Wednesday's loss to the Chicago Cubs. Prior to his struggles over the last two days, the Pirates' veteran closer had converted his last 23 save opportunities dating back to last season.

Even though he will turn 39 next month, Mesa continues to thrive as the closer for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The veteran righthander, whose fastball still tops out in the mid-90s, has notched seven saves in seven relief appearances this season. Over that span, he has allowed just one run on seven hits, striking out nine and walking two.

The Pirates view Mike Gonzalez as their closer of the future, but if Mesa continues to produce, a change won't be made any time soon.
