8/25/2005

Surhoff was activated from the 15-day disabled list Wednesday and went hitless in three at bats as the Orioles fell to the Los Angeles Angels, 3-1.

Surhoff, who suffered a strained left groin last Sunday, was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Starting pitcher Sidney Ponson, also injured in that game, was likewise shelved, and the Orioles called up pitcher Aaron Rakers and first baseman Alejandro Freire from Triple-A Ottawa.

Surhoff has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Baltimore Orioles. The 40-year-old outfielder, who takes the roster spot of the demoted David Newhan, had been out of action since June 19, due to a strained intercostal muscle in his left side. He is batting .288 with four home runs and 19 RBI in 42 games this season.

Surhoff has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Baltimore Orioles, due to a strained intercostal muscle in his left side, an injury apparently suffered while diving for a ball on Saturday. The veteran will be replaced on the active roster by third baseman/outfielder David Newhan.

Surhoff extended his hitting streak to a dozen games Wednesday, going 1-for-4 in Baltimore's loss to Pittsburgh. In his 12-game run, the Orioles' veteran is 20-for-49 (.408) with four doubles, two triples, seven RBI and eight runs scored. He's picked it up with fellow outfielder Larry Bigbie on the disabled list.

Surhoff has fared well playing every day in place of injured left fielder Larry Bigbie. The 40-year-old veteran has an 11-game hitting streak in which he's batting .422 with four doubles, two triples, seven RBI and eight runs scored. For the season, Surhoff is a .320 hitter with 18 runs scored and 17 RBI in 34 games.

Bothered by a back ailment, Surhoff wasn't in the Baltimore lineup Thursday for the Orioles' 7-4 loss to Kansas City. There's no word on whether he'll be available for the Orioles' interleague opener against Philadelphia on Friday.
