Rafael Palmeiro

11/15/2005

Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan says the club is cutting ties with Palmeiro. The 41-year-old veteran continued a steady decline in production in 2005, batting .266 with 18 home runs and 60 RBIs in 110 games for Baltimore.

The Baltimore Orioles have informed Palmeiro that he will not be dressing for the remainder of the team's schedule this season. In addition to the on-going steriod issue, the veteran first baseman has been bothered by ankle and knee problems, limiting him to just seven at-bats since the beginning of August.

Reportedly battling injuries to his left ankle and right knee, Palmeiro has been sent home to rehab his injuries. The Baltimore Orioles have told the DH-first baseman to go home to Texas to recover.

Palmeiro is just 2-for-20 (.100) in his limited playing time since returning from his steroid-related suspension, and Baltimore interim manager Sam Perlozzo now says that the veteran first baseman is no longer the everyday guy at the position.

8/20/2005

Palmeiro is unlikely to play again until sometime early next week because of a sprained right ankle suffered while running out a grounder in Tuesday's game against the Oakland A's.

8/17/2005

Palmeiro wasn't in the Baltimore lineup Wednesday after spraining his ankle in Tuesday night's game against Oakland. He tweaked the ankle on an infield single, and the Orioles' first baseman couldn't put weight on it when he awoke on Wednesday. X-rays revealed no breaks.

Palmeiro made his return Sunday from the 10-day suspension he received for failing a drug test under the new MLB drug policy for performance-enhancing substances. He went 0-for-4 with a walk amidst a stream of boos and commentary at Camden Yards.

8/13/2005

Orioles interim manager Sam Perlozzo expects to pencil in Palmeiro as Baltimore's designated hitter for Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. This will be Palmeiro's first appearance since returning from his 10-game suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing substances.

8/11/2005

After serving his 10-day suspension for failing a drug test for performance-enhancing substances, Palmeiro returns to the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. Orioles interim manager Sam Perlozzo suggested it wasn't certain that the veteran first baseman would be in Thursday's lineup against Tampa Bay. He plans to talk to his player first before filling out his lineup card.

8/1/2005

Palmeiro, who this month joined Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray in the 500-homer/3,000 hit club, was suspended Monday for violating Major League Baseball's steroid policy. It was less than five months ago that the Orioles' first baseman told Congress that "I have never used steroids. Period." The 40-year-old Palmeiro is the seventh and highest-profile player to test positive under the major league policy adopted for performance-enhancing drugs earlier this year.

With a hit in Baltimore's 5-3 win over Seattle Thursday, Palmeiro moved to within one hit of the 3,000-hit club. When he gets there, the Orioles' first baseman becomes just the fourth major leaguer to collect 3,000 hits and 500 home runs, joining Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray in that select group. Palmeiro enters Friday's showdown at Safeco Field with 2,999 hits and 566 homers.

7/11/2005

Palmeiro homered for the third consecutive game, going 1-for-3 with two RBI in Sunday's victory over the Boston Red Sox. In the four-game series against the World Series champions, the Orioles' veteran first baseman went 5-for-13 with the trio of longballs and nine RBI.

7/10/2005

Palmeiro went 2-for-3 with a home run and six RBI in the Orioles' 9-1 rout of the Red Sox, bringing the 39-year old veteran within three hits of 3000.
