Ruben Sierra

7/10/2006

Sierra was released by the Twins on Monday after suffering through an injury-plagued half-year with the team. The designated hitter signed a free-agent contract in the offseason, but had only 28 at-bats this season after spending six weeks on the disabled list after rupturing the biceps tendon near his left elbow. He batted .179 with one double and four RBIs.

Sierra was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Friday after missing 42 games because of a ruptured left biceps tendon. The Minnesota Twins designated hitter was signed in late April and batted .188 (3-for-16) with two RBIs in seven games.

An MRI exam Monday revealed Sierra has a ruptured biceps tendon near his left elbow, countering initial reports of a mere strain. The Twins' reserve will rehab the injury without surgery but is expected to miss several months. He could make it back before the end of the 2006 season.

Sierra was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a strained left biceps. The Twins' designated hitter was injured while swinging at a pitch in an 18-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. He is scheduled to have an MRI exam on Monday, said manager Ron Gardenhire.

The Minnesota Twins purchased Sierra's minor league contract Monday, activating the veteran DH-first baseman after rehabbing a quadriceps injury he suffered during spring training. The 40-year-old veteran batted .229 with four home runs and 29 RBIs in 170 at-bats for the New York Yankees in 2005.

3/21/2006

Sierra strained his right quadriceps on Sunday, and Minnesota's veteran DH-first base candidate is likely to start the season on the disabled list. "He'll be down for a while," Twins general manager Terry Ryan told the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The New York Yankees activated Sierra from the disabled list Thursday. The Yankees' designated hitter has been out since mid-July with a hamstring injury. In 41 games this season, Sierra is a .286 hitter with three home runs and 25 RBI.

An MRI exam has revealed a tear in Sierra's left hamstring, but the Yankees' DH believes he will be ready to return in less than two weeks. He said he was told such a tear takes 4-6 weeks to heal, and he's already been out nearly four weeks. Sierra has been hitting in the cage every day, but team trainers haven't let him hit on the field yet. He tried running last week, but he felt pain in his leg, and that kept him from starting a minor league rehab assignment.

8/5/2005

Sierra said he would like to have an MRI exam of his strained left hamstring, which has swelled near the area where the discomfort is. The Yankees' designated hitter said he has been shut down completely, and he believes he'll be out at least another two weeks.

7/31/2005

Sierra can swing a bat without pain, but remains unable to run the bases well enough to begin a rehab assignment in Tampa. Out since July 19 with a strained left hamstring, the 39-year-old Yankees veteran is eligible to come of the disabled list on Wednesday, but is unlikely to do so. The switch-hitting Sierra is batting .286 with 12 doubles, three homers and 25 RBI in 105 at-bats for the Yankees this season.

7/25/2005

Sierra, who took dry swings on Saturday and Sunday for the first time since injuring his left hamstring on Monday, will take batting practice when the Yankees return to the Bronx on Tuesday. The 39-year-old switch-hitter, who could begin a minor league rehab assignment as soon as Saturday, is eligible to come off the disabled list on August 3.

The Yankees have placed Sierra on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring injury. Sierra injured the muscle right as he was rounding first base following his go-ahead single in Monday night's win over the Rangers. Although Sierra was in better shape on Tuesday, the Yankees have moved him to the DL and recalled infielder Andy Phillips from Triple-A Columbus to take his place on the roster.

Now that the Yankees have made his DL stint official, if you're starting Sierra, make sure to get him out of your lineup as soon as possible.

Sierra injured his left hamstring Monday while hitting what turned out to be the game-winning two-run single in New York's 11-10 victory over Texas. The Yankees' designated hitter was limping awkwardly when he got to first base, and didn't put any pressure on his left leg while being helped back to the dugout after his eighth-inning hit. Sierra may be headed for the disabled list.

Sierra and the Yankees' other DH options will be squeezed for playing time this week, when New York plays interleague series in Milwaukee and St. Louis. Sierra is batting .200 (8-for-40) with 10 RBI in 19 games this season.

5/20/2005

The Yankees have activated designated hitter Ruben Sierra on Friday. Sierra had been placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 20 with a partially torn bicep muscle. Sierra was batting .269 with two home runs and eight RBI before going on the DL. First baseman Andy Phillips was sent back down to Triple A Columbus to make room for the veteran switch hitter.

Sierra left an extended spring training game Tuesday after feeling discomfort in his left leg. Rehabbing a partially torn biceps muscle, the Yankees' designated hitter felt pain in his upper leg as he left the batter's box during his first at-bat. After grounding out to first, Sierra ran and did stretching drills but was removed from the game against Philadelphia minor leaguers.

This development probably will delay Sierra's return to the Yankees. Before injuring his leg, he was expected to rejoin the major league club later this week.

5/14/2005

Sierra is expected to play in a extended spring training game on Monday. This would be the first game for Sierra since partially tearing his right biceps on April 20.

5/12/2005

The timetable for Sierra has been set back a day or two. While the Yankees' designated hitter has spent time in a batting cage at New York's spring training complex the last couple days, he probably won't begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment until Monday. The tentative plan is to have him rejoin the Yankees later next week.

5/10/2005

Sierra could begin playing in minor league games as soon as this weekend. His partially torn right biceps muscle is pain-free and the minor ribcage injury that bothered him last week appears to be gone. He should be hitting before the weekend, and Sierra could return to the Yankees by the middle of next week.

Then Sierra will face the DH logjam, with both Jason Giambi and Bernie Williams in the mix.

5/4/2005

Sierra won't be ready to return to the New York Yankees when he becomes eligible to come off the disabled list on Friday. New York's designated hitter is able to bat lefthanded, but still feels discomfort in his arm batting righthanded.

It may be a week or two before Sierra joins the DH logjam. He and Jason Giambi were the primary DH guys, but now Bernie Williams is part of the mix following the defensive reallignment that moved Hideki Matsui to center and Tony Womack to left.

4/29/2005

Sierra took some easy swings on Thursday, one week after he went on the 15-day disabled list with a biceps strain. The Yankees' designated hitter said he didn't feel any pain while swinging in the cage. He predicted he'd be ready to return to action next Friday, May 6, when he is eligible to come off the DL.

Yankees manager Joe Torre countered Sierra's optimism, saying he expected his DH to need a few minor league rehab games and a little more time than a week before returning.

4/22/2005

Sierra might have a slight tear in his right biceps muscle, an injury suffered while swinging at a pitch in Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees' outfielder/designated hitter, who has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, will undergo an MRI on Friday to determine how much damage there is. He is batting .269 with two home runs and eight RBI in nine games this season.

The Yankees will fill the void on the roster prior to Friday's meeting with the Texas Rangers. Jason Giambi and Tino Martinez likely will split time at first base and DH while Sierra is sidelined.

The New York Yankees placed Sierra on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with what might be a slight tear of his right biceps. An MRI exam is scheduled for Friday to determine if he has a tear. The Yankees' designated hitter suffered the injury swinging at a pitch, and he experienced pain when he connected for a double on the next offering.

Sierra is hitting .269 with two homers and eight RBI. The Yankees didn't immediately replace him on the roster.

4/21/2005

Sierra left in the fourth inning of the Yankees' victory over Toronto Wednesday with a strained right biceps muscle. Yankees manager Joe Torre said Sierra may not be available for a few days.
